Supertrash - Candy Tangerine Man and the Society of Illustrators show
Here's my poster for the Supertrash film festival. It's for a little seen blaxploitation gem called the Candy Tangerine Man.

Also, been meaning to post about the Society of Illustrators Annual show. I had 2 pieces accepted this year!!! The faux Romance style Afrodisiac covers and the Brother Voodoo short strip Brian Maruca and I did for Marvel's indie book. Big thanks are due to Chris Pitzer of Adhouse Books! First, he's the guy who commissioned the work, and then he told me to submit it the show. Glad he's on my side. Thanks, Chris! Sadly, the Brother Voodoo story will not be included now per Marvel's wishes. I just sent the framed prints of the Afrodisiac art, and I was really happy with how they turned out. If you're in NYC 2.23.08 - 3.22.08, go see the show!

Nipsy Russell! LOL!

These are great. I love your Afrodiziak stuff with all the aging effects.

I just got a DVD of Macy Gray in Vegas with an Afro that could be used as an airbag in an SUV.

Excellent stuff? Do you have a particular love for doing this kind of old timey art, or was this all commissioned?

Also, love the hand placement on Afrodisiac 70.

Not to mention the creative juxtaposition on the cigarette lighting issue, combined as it is with the "swallow their pride" tagline.

Oh, Kareem. Don't you know that marking your territory like that makes it depreciate in value?

Jim, I've never had the chance to meet you in person to tell you this, but I really love your work.

I also didn't know you were on LJ so I'll happily be keeping an eye on your stuff from now on.

Hi, Paul --

Thanks. I'm really disappointed I couldn't do a pinup for Aqua Leung. Just ran into scheduling problems. But the work looks good. Best of luck with it!

Retro Blaxploitation Romance Comix

A friend pointed these out to me this morning, and I simply adore your artwork! As a guy that spends a lot of time working with digital images of old comics, I have to say I've never seen anything quite like this - the technique is absolutely fabulous. The printing defects in the colors, the water stains, the tape, the banners, the little interjection of a photo bit, the scribbles - these are spot on representations of old romance covers. And the content! Wowee! Mixing up blaxpoitation images with romance covers is great gumbo. The old romance comics can be a lot saucier than the modern reader might think - but interjecting a black stud pimp into this urbane arena is a glorious idea that makes for some the neatest comix-based pop art I've ever seen. What a great avenue for examining, celebrating, and dissecting some of our icons, sterteotypes, and taboos. Thanks for making the old new again. I'm sure it would be an incredible amount of work, but I'd love to see the whole comic done in this style... If Marvel doesn't want the Brother Voodoo strip (and wtf does that say about Marvel's taste these days), are you going to publish it elsewhere?

Cheers,

Darwin

Hey, Darwin --

Thanks for the feedback. Marvel owns Brother Voodoo, and they bought my story, so they own the printing rights to that as well. Seems unlikely that it will see print, unless they change their minds.
